Leading Batsmen
Note that many scorecards in the 18th century are unknown or have missing details and so it is impossible to provide a complete analysis of batting performances: e.g., the missing not outs prevent computation of batting averages. The "runs scored" are in fact the runs known.
With few matches being played, only six batsmen exceeded 150 runs:
- Tom Walker – 239
- Jack Small – 235
- John Wells – 231
- Robert Robinson – 227
- John Hammond – 192
- William Beldham – 179

This, despite the fact that the American Revolution was successfulrealizing the purposes of the revolutionaries and establishing a durable political regimewhile the French Revolution was a resounding failure, devouring its own children and leading to an imperial despotism, followed by an eventual restoration of the monarchy.”
—Irving Kristol (b. 1920)
