11 Luchtmobiele Brigade - Function

Function

The 11 LMB is a highly disciplined, light infantry, rapid reaction force. It is trained to operate in any climatological and geological condition. The unit can be deployed in 7 days to 20 days (depending on deployment size), anywhere in the world.

Signalling the capabilities of its soldiers, the brigade is airborne qualified, the men of 11 LMB operators wear the maroon beret. 11 LMB soldiers can be deployed by helicopter (fast-rope and rappelling) and fixed-wing aircraft (parachute). The emphasis is on air assault operations (by helicopters and Air Landing Operations), but each battalion has a dedicated parachute trained company. The brigade reconnaissance unit and the battalions' reconnaissance platoons are all paratrooper.

The primary task of 11 LMB is to ensure the defense of the Netherlands and its NATO allies. Its second primary task is to be deployed worldwide as an expeditionary, peacekeeping and peace-enforcing formation. It has seen action in Bosnia, Macedonia, Cyprus, Kosovo, Iraq, Democratic Republic of the Congo and is now deployed in Afghanistan.

Other than peace(-keeping) missions, the 11 LMB can also be deployed for humanitarian aid missions, evacuation, disaster relief and (combat) search and rescue (CSAR).

Famous quotes containing the word function:

    The information links are like nerves that pervade and help to animate the human organism. The sensors and monitors are analogous to the human senses that put us in touch with the world. Data bases correspond to memory; the information processors perform the function of human reasoning and comprehension. Once the postmodern infrastructure is reasonably integrated, it will greatly exceed human intelligence in reach, acuity, capacity, and precision.
    Albert Borgman, U.S. educator, author. Crossing the Postmodern Divide, ch. 4, University of Chicago Press (1992)

    If the children and youth of a nation are afforded opportunity to develop their capacities to the fullest, if they are given the knowledge to understand the world and the wisdom to change it, then the prospects for the future are bright. In contrast, a society which neglects its children, however well it may function in other respects, risks eventual disorganization and demise.
    Urie Bronfenbrenner (b. 1917)

    “... The state’s one function is to give.
    The bud must bloom till blowsy blown
    Its petals loosen and are strown;
    And that’s a fate it can’t evade
    Unless ‘twould rather wilt than fade.”
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
