Famous quotes containing the words united, states and/or congress:
“Fortunately, the time has long passed when people liked to regard the United States as some kind of melting pot, taking men and women from every part of the world and converting them into standardized, homogenized Americans. We are, I think, much more mature and wise today. Just as we welcome a world of diversity, so we glory in an America of diversityan America all the richer for the many different and distinctive strands of which it is woven.”
—Hubert H. Humphrey (19111978)
“[N]o combination of dictator countries of Europe and Asia will halt us in the path we see ahead for ourselves and for democracy.... The people of the United States ... reject the doctrine of appeasement.”
—Franklin D. Roosevelt (18821945)
“Such is the labor which the American Congress exists to protect, honest, manly toil, honest as the day is long, that makes his bread taste sweet, and keeps society sweet, which all men respect and have consecrated; one of the sacred band, doing the needful but irksome drudgery.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
