Famous quotes containing the words presence of, presence, campaign and/or washington:

A writer who writes, “I am alone” ... can be considered rather comical. It is comical for a man to recognize his solitude by addressing a reader and by using methods that prevent the individual from being alone. The word alone is just as general as the word bread. To pronounce it is to summon to oneself the presence of everything the word excludes.
    Maurice Blanchot (b. 1907)

There are twenty ways of going to a point, and one is the shortest; but set out at once on one. A man who has that presence of mind which can bring to him on the instant all he knows, is worth for action a dozen men who know as much, but can only bring it to light slowly.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Now, Mr. President, we don’t intend to trouble you during the campaign but after you are elected, then look out for us!
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)

I may as well say, what all men feel, that whilst our every amiable and very innocent representatives and senators at Washington are accomplished lawyers and merchants, and every eloquent at dinners and at caucuses, there is a disastrous want of men in New England.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
